The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Brunswick invites prospective Honours BSc, MSc, and PhD students interested in collaborative research work in Dr. Alex Zimmer’s lab to submit their applications.

The Zimmer lab in Saint John focuses on the physiological mechanisms that aquatic organisms, primarily fishes, use to cope with environmental change and extremes.

The lab studies physiological responses to changes in salinity, freshwater acidification, pollution, and other environmentally relevant stressors.

They seek to understand the underlying mechanisms governing these responses using various experimental approaches.

Motivated students are sought for MSc and PhD positions in research areas such as the ecophysiology of fishes in naturally acidic lakes, genetic basis of salinity tolerance in estuarine fishes, mechanisms of pollution adaptation in coastal and inland fishes, and developmental physiology of euryhaline fishes.

Eligibility Criteria and Benefits:

– Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
– Meet the entry and admission requirements of the university
– Meet the English language requirements of the university
– Fully-funded stipends start at $23.5k CAD per year for MSc students and $25k CAD per year for PhD students, before tuitions and fees
– Flexible start dates of January, May, or September 2025
